Good Help Is Hard to Keep

The turnover rate here is incredibly high, and the work ethic is incredibly low. People routinely get fired or quit and cycle on to other local businesses who have open positions from people recently being fired or quit.

This all has to do with the age of the workforce; the fact that we’re all kind of on vacation as well as working; hangovers; low wages, etc.

Many people go around looking for second jobs, or move into tents to try to save more money from the summer.

One guy had a piece of cardboard folded into three sections and he said he was going to write “Anchorage” on one section, “Fairbanks” on the other section and “Will work for food” on the third section just in case he got fired or quit. I thought that was an interesting contingency plan.
